The writer Walter Pater pronounced that ‘all art aspires towards the condition of music’. Playing on the experience of synesthesia, The Baldwin Gallery’s music events feature musicians or performers whose work gives voice or rhythm to the accompanying art exhibition.

For your ears: Computer music technology meets live instrumental performance. The Ensemble KLEM will participate in a performance of Julio d’Escriván’s Séance Project. In 2015, composer d’Escrivan obtained the original digital transcriptions of the pianola rolls originally recorded by Basque-French musician Maurice Ravel in the 1920s. Since then he has been working on a remixing of and interventions upon Ravel’s original piano performances.

For your eyes: An excerpt from the Baldwin’s autumn exhibition, Mobile Forms: from Parisian Abstraction to Amerindian Pop. Parisian artist Alexandra Roussopoulos’s exuberant and refined meditations on psycho-geography, political space and personhood meet the autobiographical skin drums and panel paintings of Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw artist Steve Smith, as he represents the unified but transformative principles of indigenous personhood. Smith’s work is further contextualized by the inclusion of traditional serigraphs by the great Haida artist, Robert Davidson, one of Canada’s most respected contemporary artists, credited with the renaissance of the Northwest Pacific Coast art tradition.

Tickets include entry, a welcome drink, the exhibition, a talk by Dennison Smith, Gallery Director, and a performance by Julio d’Escrivan and Ensemble Klem.
